One of the most fun things to do when you are traveling to a different country is to see how people dress. It can broaden your perspective in a number of ways. One way that it can broaden your perspective is to see how people view clothing as an expression or how it is tied into the culture. This has several deeper implications. For example, looking at the clothing of other cultures can show how people of different socioeconomic statuses dress. You can also see how these ways of dressing from different classes dictates every day social interactions. In a completely different way, looking at how others dress in another country can help you see how clothes are an expression of art in that country (if they are at all). Finally, you can see how clothing is tied to the beauty standards of that culture.
Seeing something you like
If you look at the clothing of another country and are interested in purchasing it, there are several things that you should keep in mind. For example, if it belongs to a culture that is much different than your own, you should look into whether it is something that is traditional or has strong ties to that culture (i.e. a kimono). This is important because acquiring these things can become more difficult. Oftentimes, things that are traditional can be handmade and expensive. The other thing that you have to keep in mind is that wearing something traditional outside of context can be cultural appropriation. This is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. More on this in another post.
